Name-Based Case Searches
Utah Courts Xchange serves as the main public repository for Grand County District and Justice Court matters. Start every name search by picking the correct jurisdiction. Then limit the scope. Traffic, infractions, small claims, and Class B or C misdemeanors usually belong to Justice Court. Felonies and most civil and domestic cases point to Seventh District Court in Moab. Probate points there too.
- Open Xchange and select District Court, Justice Court, or both.
- Enter the surname or business in Last Name/Company and add the first name when known.
- Use a trailing wildcard, such as Doe* and John*, to catch middle names, suffixes, and variations.
- Narrow Search Scope to Grand County or the Moab court, then add case type or a date range if needed.
- Compare county, court, case type, number, filed date, and party role before opening Case History/Documents.
Every Search click is billable, and Xchange displays no more than 500 results. Narrow the scope first to avoid needless charges and make common-name matches easier to sort through.

Xchange's Grand County Docket Scope
Xchange pulls its public information from CORIS, the Utah Courts case-management system. Nothing appears until local court staff enter the data. Results can include public District and Justice Court case information: parties, lawyers, judges, case events, hearings, judgments, outcomes, and account entries. Treat it as a summary system. It does not promise that each underlying paper can be viewed. The official Xchange landing page lays out the guest, login, and account routes.
Narrow this statewide entry point to Grand County and the proper court. A statewide name match alone cannot establish that a record belongs to the case you intend.
Case Number Searches
A known case number usually beats a name for precision. Type it into Xchange, then add the Grand County or Moab court scope. Utah Courts warns that case numbers are not unique statewide. Official guidance says the first two digits identify the filing year. But there is no single local pattern that safely covers every court and case type. A number like YY-[court case code]-sequence is a reading aid, not a guaranteed format. Compare the returned court, county, case type, party names, and filing date. Citation numbers also are not unique statewide. Pair a citation with its issuing court. When a case number returns several records, narrowing the location is essential.
Grand County Xchange Guest Access
Online Xchange access is not free. A one-time guest account carries a $10 account fee, with searches at $0.20 each and available documents at $1 each. The guest session lasts 24 hours. It expires after 30 minutes of idle time. A subscription works on different setup and monthly terms, so it suits heavier use; the official guest registration screen displays the one-time access choice.
Remember that the account charge, search charge, and document charge are separate. Plan your fields before clicking Search, especially when a name may return hundreds of matches.
Case Search Results Explained
Think of the result list as an index for picking the right case. Clicking Case History/Documents opens the fuller chronology. A case number link does not itself retrieve documents. Available records may carry a separate Purchase link, and an event entry does not guarantee that a pleading, exhibit, audio file, or signed order is public.
| County and Court | Grand County and the Moab District or Justice Court location holding the case. |
|---|---|
| Case Number | The location-linked identifier, which is not unique throughout Utah. |
| Case Type | A category or code such as FS for State Felony, SC for Small Claims, or DA for Divorce/Annulment. |
| Parties | Names and role codes such as PLA, DEF, PET, or RES. |
| Filed Date | The date the court filed the case. |
| Proceedings | The dated sequence of case events, hearings, pleas, rulings, or dispositions. |
| Documents | Purchase links for available images, distinct from the case summary. |
A disposition is an entered outcome, not always the full judgment image. A minute entry can summarize a proceeding without replacing a signed order. When you need an official copy, the Grand County clerk and court-record request process is the way to get it.
Old Moab Dockets and 1996
Moab District Court connected to Xchange on July 30, 1996. Utah Courts coverage material says District Court information is complete from that local connection date. Older records may not be fully represented online. Justice Court historical conversion was independent. So its older coverage may differ. That history explains why a well-formed Grand County search can still miss an old matter. A miss does not prove the record never existed. Ask the proper clerk whether a public file can be inspected or requested. The District Court number is 435-259-1349. Justice Court uses 435-259-1334 and jcmoab@utcourts.gov.
Two Ways to Search: County and State
Grand County offers no separate free countywide docket database that replaces Xchange. The real choice is between a statewide or county-scoped Xchange query and local court access. Xchange can search all participating courts, a single county, or one court. The clerk's counter and courthouse terminal give you a local fallback tied to the court that maintains the record.
| Statewide Xchange | Grand County Court Access |
|---|---|
| Search District and Justice Court information across Utah | Ask the clerk responsible for the known local case |
| Paid online searches and separate document purchases | Free inspection and possible copy or staff-time fees |
| Best for unknown county or multi-court name results | Best for missing records, official copies, and local clarification |
| Omits non-public material | Uses a formal request to assess lawful access |
Free public Xchange terminals sit in most district courthouses. Utah Courts says to verify availability at justice-court locations. At 125 E. Center Street, ask for the District or Justice Court counter, not the Grand County Clerk/Auditor.
Grand County Citation Search Route
The Grand County Justice Court page sends citation and payment users to a Secure Instant Payments vendor. That path sits apart from statewide Xchange. The county points users to a Case Search and Payment Option for looking up a case or citation number and making payment. The live form builds its own fields, so trust only the labels it shows. The officially linked vendor endpoint handles the lookup and payment screens.
Grand County Justice Court sends some citations down this route, so start here when that court directs you there. If the form cannot locate the number, call 435-259-1334. The same number helps when the issuing court is unclear.
No Grand County Docket Result
An empty search result is not proof that no case exists. Grand County dockets hide from searches for simple reasons. The wrong court level, a misspelled name, an odd name form, a narrow date window, or the wrong location can all be the cause. Brand-new filings may sit unentered. Old Justice Court matters may still carry gaps from conversion. Private, safeguarded, protected, sealed, expunged, and juvenile records stay hidden or limited by law.
Retrying the right way fixes most misses. Use the official wildcard format and narrow the docket search to Grand County. Search both court levels only if the case type is a guess. Authorized parties can turn to MyCourt Case for matters linked to them. The clerk's counter at 125 E. Center Street handles in-person case lookup. 435-259-1349 reaches District Court, and 435-259-1334 reaches Justice Court. Paper requests can go by mail. The Request for a Record form covers inspection or copies. The October 2024 order also lists email filing, a secure dropbox, and lobby scanners. Those routes serve filing, not public search.
Which Cases Stay Restricted
Utah court rules presume public access. Yet they sort some records into private, safeguarded, protected, or sealed categories. Xchange leaves out sealed adoptions and civil commitments. Expunged cases, juvenile delinquency, child welfare, and termination-of-parental-rights matters stay out too. Even a visible public case history has limits. Domestic, protective-order, guardianship, medical, and victim information can face restrictions.
The rules for judicial records differ from other government records. Utah's Government Records Access and Management Act covers agency records. Court records answer to UCJA Rules 4-202 through 4-202.08. Grand County's GRAMA portal serves county-held records. It cannot replace a request to the District or Justice Court clerk. Anyone seeking non-public material must state a legal basis for access and may need proof of authorization.
Do not bypass a restriction. Use the Utah Courts Request for a Record process and let the court decide what may lawfully be released.
Looking at public court records costs nothing. Copies and research time can carry fees, and responses usually arrive within ten business days. Utah Courts will not fax or email records already available through Xchange.
